Link to Nazi hunters: The butcher of Lyon documentary
Documentary Description
As head of the Gestapo in Lyon, Klaus Barbie personally tortured
prisoners and oversaw the deaths of thousands of people. After the war,
he was co-opted by the American Counter Intelligence Corps, who
protected him in return for information. When he finally slipped away
to Argentina, the Americans looked the other way. But back in France,
Nazi hunters Serge and Beate Klarsfeld were determined Barbie should be
found and brought to trial. When a photograph emerged suggesting
Barbie was alive and well in Bolivia, they began a mission that would
last over a decade and involve a race-against-time pursuit to the
border of Peru, a failed kidnap attempt, shady international deals and,
finally, a cloak and dagger night flight to France where the notorious
butcher was eventually brought to account. He was sentenced to life
imprisonment in 1987.
